Charlie Teel

Charlie Teel
(1922-2004)

Mr. Charlie Teel could be called the Founding Father of Las Vegas golf. He moved to Las Vegas in 1942, and quickly established himself as the best player in the area in addition to being a very influential local member of the Professional Golf Association of America. He was a member of the original class of what was then called the Nevada Golf Hall of Fame, and it could be said that the implementation of the new Hall was because the state needed a place to fit in his trophy case. Mr. Teel collected an unprecedented 18 Las Vegas City Amateur and Southern Nevada Amateur titles, and was also a back-to-back Nevada State Amateur champion. His left arm was withered from a childhood ailment, but he overcame that disability by learning to drive short and straight, chip onto the green and putt with marksman-like accuracy, which earned him the intimidating nickname, Charlie “One Putt” Teel. Away from competition, he was just as accurate as he ran the now, historic, Paradise Valley Country Club (currently Wildhorse Golf Club), and Sahara Country Club (currently Las Vegas National Golf Club). And he served on the committees of the PGA Tour’s Sahara Invitational and the inaugural Tournament of Champions, where he also served as a rules official. Both of those tournaments helped put Las Vegas on the international golf map, and built the foundation for what Las Vegas has become. "He had a deadly short game, especially from 100 yards in," says Dick Huff, Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2004. "When I got to Las Vegas in 1961, Charlie already was a legend here." Mr. Teel continued to make a positive impact on the Las Vegas golf community following his passing as his estate left a sizeable monetary contribution to benefit junior golf in Southern Nevada.
